Paystack Don Change Strategy: E No Wan Just Move Money Again, E Wan Keep Am Too

For fintech business, sometimes the real money no dey only for moving money. E dey for wetin happen after the money enter account.

Na this direction Paystack dey move.

For October 2020, Stripe agree to acquire Paystack, one Nigerian startup wey help businesses collect payment online, for $200 million. At the time, na one of the biggest startup acquisition deals wey Nigeria don see.

Back then, Paystack get about 60,000 customers, and the main business model na to collect transaction fees whenever businesses receive payment through the platform.

But six years later, the company don begin build something bigger.

From Payment Fees to Banking Business

For Paystack traditional payment model, the company dey earn money whenever transactions happen. But as the business grow across African markets, exchange-rate wahala and operating costs begin put pressure on the business.

Paystack dey charge 1.5% plus ₦100 per transaction, with the fee capped at ₦2,000.

The challenge be say, transaction fees alone no necessarily give fintech companies the same kind of recurring income wey banks fit earn from lending and other financial services.

For bank, customer deposits fit support lending and other activities, subject to regulatory requirements, liquidity needs, and the cost of funding.

And na this opportunity Paystack dey pursue.

Brass Acquisition Open Another Door

For May 2024, Paystack lead a group wey acquire Brass, a business banking startup.

The acquisition give Paystack a route to business customers wey already dey use financial services for their daily operations.

Brass also show the challenges wey fit happen when a financial services company struggle to meet withdrawal demands. The company had experienced withdrawal difficulties, with reports of a possible ₦2 billion gap in its books.

For Paystack, the acquisition no be only about adding another company. E also bring experience and access to business accounts.

Zap Push Paystack Enter Consumer Finance

For March 2025, Paystack launch Zap, its first consumer app, with deposits initially held at Titan.

But the expansion no come without regulatory challenges.

The Central Bank of Nigeria reportedly fined Paystack ₦250 million in April 2025 after concerns about Zap operating like a wallet under a payments licence wey no cover the way the product was structured.

The issue highlight one important lesson for fintech founders: moving money and holding customer funds no be the same regulatory activity.

A company fit get permission to process payments but still need the appropriate authorisation before e fit operate certain deposit-taking or wallet services.

Zap later received regulatory approval.

Paystack Don Get Its Own Microfinance Bank

For January 2026, Paystack acquire Ladder Microfinance Bank and announce plans to use Paystack MFB to lend to businesses first before expanding lending to individuals.

The company also establish The Stack Group as a holding company.

For June 2026, Brass announce say e go stop operating as a standalone business and move customers into Paystack MFB.

Allawee, a card company Paystack reportedly acquired in 2025, also tell customers to move to Paystack accounts before its planned December 1 closure.

These moves suggest say Paystack dey bring different financial products under one larger business structure.

Instead of depending only on payments, the company fit explore more financial services through the appropriate licences and business units.

But Paystack Still Get One Big Challenge

Even with all these acquisitions, Paystack still need to convince customers to keep their money with the company.

Companies like Moniepoint, OPay, and PalmPay don build strong physical distribution networks through agents, merchants, and everyday transactions.

For many Nigerian traders, these physical touchpoints make am easier to deposit cash, withdraw money, and build daily habits around their financial service providers.

Paystack’s original strength na online checkout and digital payments. E no get the same kind of extensive agent network wey some competitors don build.

That means Paystack must find other ways to attract deposits, retain business customers, and compete for everyday financial transactions.

WetindeyTech Take

Paystack’s next chapter no be just about processing more payments. Na about building a wider financial services business around the customers and businesses wey already trust the platform.

But make we no confuse expansion with guaranteed success.

Buying a bank fit give Paystack more opportunities to earn revenue from deposits and lending, but e still need strong risk management, customer trust, regulatory compliance, and a sustainable way to attract deposits.

The big question now be this: Can Paystack turn its strength in online payments into the kind of everyday banking relationship wey Nigerian customers already get with their banks and agent-network fintechs?

That na the next battle wey go determine how far the company fit go.
